Michael Livshultz was born in 1948
in the Ukrainian town of Konotop. After his family moved to Minsk,
Belarus, Michael attended a four year art school along with his
high school studies. In 1966, Michael entered Minsk Radio Engineering
College, which he graduated in 1971 with a degree in Electrical
Engineering. While still in college, Michael began to draw regularly
in the studio of his father, Chaim Livchitz, and in 1974 he decided
to leave his engineering position to pursue a career in art. Michael
started to participate in the exhibitions sponsored by the Artists'
Union and teach art and drafting at the public high school in Minsk.
An artistic milestone was an acquisition of Michael's work by The
State Art Museum in Minsk. A difficult climate for the creative
work in the Soviet Union and a desire to seek greater opportunities
abroad had prompted Michael to immigrate to the United States in
1979. Since arriving in Chicago, Michael had joined the Art Center
and The Figurative Art League of Evanston, IL participating in sculpture,
drawing, and painting workshops. In Chicago, Michael took part in
a number of group shows as well as several one-man shows cosponsored
by the Noyes Cultural Center in Evanston. The works of Michael Livshultz
can be found in private collections in the United States, Canada,
Israel, and Belarus.
